Mother of Teenager Dead After a Year of Torture in Chinese Detention Center

Ms. Wu before she was detained and tortured for practicing Falun Gong.

 

August 22, 2002 - With festering scars on her body and severe edema in her abdomen, Ms. Lingxia Wu was released from a Chinese detention center where she had been held and severely tortured for the past year. She died three weeks later from her injuries. Ms. Wu was 37 years old.

Ukraine Judge Throws Out Case Against Falun Gong; Beijing Pressure Tactics Fail

As the Falun Gong practitioners were taken into custody, witnesses say police cited pressure from Beijing as the cause, stating China is "huge and powerful" compared with a developing country like Ukraine and that Ukraine "can’t afford trouble with China relations." According to the detained practitioners, police also mentioned that Chinese officials had struck a deal with the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to stop Falun Gong activities in Ukraine.

Banker tortured to death by police for his practice of Falun Gong

In the spring of 1998, Mr. Chan Wang spent two months in Toronto as part of a delegation from the main branch of the China People's Bank in Beijing. During his stay, he made many friends at the local Falun Gong practice groups, among them Tia Zhang, a teacher at the National Ballet School of Canada.


"He was always happy," says 61-year-old Ms. Zhang of her friend Mr. Wang. "He was very kind and he just really wanted to improve himself," she said.

On the afternoon of August 21, Mr. Wang was arrested at the Liangshan County bus station in Shandong Province
