Australians' Appeal for Falun Gong on Tiananmen Square 2001

35 Western Falun Gong practitioners appeal on Tiananmen Square for the rights of Falun Gong in China

At 2:00pm Beijing Time, 20/11/2001, approximately 35 citizens from 10 different countries, including Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, France, Israel and the UK, staged a peaceful appeal on Tiananmen Square in Beijing for the rights of Falun Gong practitioners. The practitioners were immediately detained and held at the Tiananmen Square Police Station.

In a statement issued by the practitioners shortly before the demonstration, they stated that they were gathering to appeal for the tens of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners persecuted in China over the past two and a half years, and to show that the international community is deeply concerned about this atrocity.

Kay Belonogoff

Kay Belonogoff recalled her 23-hour ordeal:

  • I was eyewitness to many acts of violence and aggression initiated and carried out by Chinese police, including the beating of another Australian.
  • I was violently pushed into a van, my hair was pulled and I received a large dark bruise on my upper left arm.
  • I was denied any privacy to use the toilet for over 17 hours.

I ask of the Australian government:

1. To deplore the treatment of Australian citizens by the Chinese police.
2. To speak up for human rights to end to state terrorism against Falun Gong in China.

Chris Cominos, who was injured the most among the practitioners in this ordeal in Beijing.

Mr Cominos was held for more than 26 hours before he was taken to his scheduled flight to Athens.

"They were very unreasonable, verbally abusive, I was pushed, pulled, punched in the face and on the body. I held onto the police van and they pulled two of my fingers bent backwards causing a hairline fracture in my left hand which was diagnosed by the doctor later."

"I called out that Falun Dafa is good…, upon hearing this comment the police immediately became extremely aggravated and one of them punched me in the face giving me a bloody nose. They then continued to roll my coat over my head covering my face and putting their hands over my mouth so that I wouldn't speak or breath for a while."

"It was not possible to make truth, compassion and tolerance illegal."

"In an effort to awaken the minds of the Chinese population that is being mislead by the vicious poisonous propaganda campaign that was launched in 1999, I have made this decision. As a Falun Dafa practitioner, I feel it is my duty to travel to Beijing and join other western practitioners. To make it known that Falun Dafa is good and is every where and it belongs to everybody."

Kate Douglass

Ms Douglas was one of the practitioners who was jailed before being moved to a hotel near Beijing's airport.

"We were locked in a tiny cell with no ventilation, 35 people were deprived of our basic human rights and treated like criminals."
"I wanted to raise awareness about the persecution, they are killing practitioners, they are sending them into mental institutions, heavily overdosing them with drugs as well, they are beating them severely."

Australians' Appeal for Falun Gong on Tiananmen Square 2002

The group of Australian Falun Dafa practitioners that were detained after their peaceful appeal for human rights in Tiananmen Square are due to arrive back early this morning at the Sydney airport.

Some have been punched and kicked, both at the time of their arrest and during their detention and interrogation by Chinese police.

The so-called "law" used to persecute Falun Dafa in China is against its own Constitution and the whole process of making such law is illegal as well. As the law of Nazi's killing of Jewish was opposed by people all over the world, Jiang Zemin's such illegal "law" is not recognized by people with justice either and has been defined by International Education Development of United Nations as "state terrorism". Australian practitioners went to China simply for clarifying such a fact to those who are deceived by Jiang's propaganda against Falun Gong.
